Cupcakeology Celebrates Grand Opening

If you find yourself in Delaware County with a craving for something sweet, Jennifer and Robert Morris of Cupcakeology have you covered. The husband and wife business and baking team celebrated the grand opening of their first retail location in Collingdale, PA, on Saturday, with music, free cupcakes, a variety of flavors, and lots of smiles to mark the occasion.

Robert and Jennifer began with the idea of starting a cupcake truck, but discovered they needed to find a kitchen to bake out of in the process. Their Collingdale location not only serves as their headquarters for their future cupcake truck, but allows them to have a store front for the community. Opening up shop has been a slow process, but it gave Morris the time she needed to really research and understand the business. Her biggest advice to anyone looking to get into the cupcake game is “Research, research, research.”

Pina Colada Cupcakes
Morris was a life-long baker, who started her cupcake career at the age of 9, selling her goods in the neighborhood. School, sports, a career in real estate, and starting a family put her baking business on hold, but Cupcakeology brings her passion for baking full-circle. Morris still uses some of the same recipes from her childhood, and boasts over 25 flavors and counting. What sets Cupcakeology apart, aside from being the only cupcakery in the area, is the moistness of the cupcakes. Morris uses buttermilk in all her recipes, an old family secret to keep flavor and moisture. I had the French Toast cupcake, and I can vouch that the buttermilk makes a difference.

Individual cupcakes start at $2 each. Special orders are available. For more information, you can visit Cupcakeology on facebook or visit their store at:

18-year-old opens cupcake bakery, sells 3,500 cupcakes opening weekend

Those are numbers that I think are good for everyone: the economy, cupcake fans, anyone who dreams of opening a cupcake business!

From the East Aurora Advertiser:

Michael Wulf, who graduated from Attica High School in June, said he wanted to bring something that was so popular on a national level to East Aurora. “It’s a great small community that supports their local businesses,” he said.

On opening day, Swirls had a 35-person line out the door and sold out of 1,000 cupcakes in less than four hours.

“I was floored at how many people came. The support from the community has been overwhelming; I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Wulf said.

In the 30 minutes this writer visited Swirls for an interview and to “test” some of the treats, more than 30 customers came in, most of whom left with goodies of their own.

From Burlington Free Press:

The store is spacious, with exposed brick and tin ceilings contrasting with bright, pink chairs. A mural by a local artist will be painted in the coming week, Trudell said.

Lacayo recalled visiting her brother, who lives in New York City, and seeing all of the cupcake shops there.

“I’ve lived in Vermont for eight years, thinking that a cupcake shop would open in Burlington but one never did,” she said. “That’s how I knew now was the right time to do this.”

My Little Cupcake specializes in mini cupcakes, which Trudell said take three bites to eat, but will also serve regular-sized treats.

“Every day we’re trying to have 24 kinds of cupcakes, including a vegan and gluten-free option,” Trudell said.

The store will also sell coffee from Black River Roasters, a Burlington-based company.

Magnolia Bakery to open in Chicago Saturday, October 1st

The famed Magnolia Bakery, which recently opened up in Bloomingdale's in New York City's Upper East Side, will open in Chicago on October 1st. From Eater Chicago:

New York's iconic Magnolia Bakery will finally make its Chicago debut at Block 37 this Saturday, Oct. 1. The look of the location is very vintage and reminds you of a seaside bakery from the '50s. This is the first Magnolia store in the Midwest, coming after openings in LA and Dubai.

The 28-seat location will offer cakes, pies, creamy banana pudding, cookies, brownies, mini cheesecakes and fresh-from-the-oven breakfast muffins. From Double Crust Pies ($24) and Strawberry Icebox Cake ($24) to Red Velvet Cake ($55, 3-layer) and S’mores Cupcakes ($3.25 each), Magnolia harkens back to the flavors and traditions of classic American baked goods.

In other Magnolia Bakery news, via their Facebook page, they are selling a Rosh Hashanah honey cupcake: "spiced honey cake with walnuts and a touch of citrus zest."

You can also follow them @magnoliabakery on Twitter.
