Tuscon's Red Velvet Cupcakery Closes This Saturday

From the Tuscon Weekly, we hear that Red Velvet Cupcakery is closing.

Red Velvet Cupcakery at 943 E. University Blvd. will serve its last cupcake this Saturday. The other Tucson-area location at La Encantada closed about six months ago.

Is this the beginning of the end for the cupcake fad in Tucson? It's been on the slide in major cities across the country for awhile.

Personally, I'm a fan mini-desserts, and the creativity that many bakers put into cupcakes can be fun and, at times, quite beautiful. But paying $3.75 for a dessert that is chiefly frosting always stings a little, even if the cupcake in question is truly top-notch.

I disagree that cupcakes are a fad. Also there are more cupcake bakeries that are opening than closing so maybe Tuscon is an anomaly from other cities.  If you live in Tuscon, let you know if you will miss Red Velvet Cupcakery. Is $3.75 too much for a cupcake?  Or were the cupcakes not that good? Here's a link to their Yelp reviews which are pretty favorable.  The only thing I see as a problem is that their is same as a chain of cupcake bakeries in the DC area, so I wonder if Arizonans couldn't find them because of a weak web presence.
